August 24, 2002

Polo was back on field #1 at Palm Beach Polo yesterday with a weekend tournament that will stretch through tomorrow, Sunday at 5 PM. Three teams played a round robin, and after 9 chukkers the field did not have a single divot.

After a hot morning, there had been some heavy rain at midday and the temperature was pleasant later in the day. This group of about 16 players (including James Whisenand and Shakir Wissa who weren't there yesterday) has been playing practice and small tournament games for 2 months already, it was the first tournament game played on field #1 since the end of the season.

The game was very animated with lots of excellent plays, Blue defeating yellow in the third series of nine chukkers.

Glenn Straub was a unanimous MVP, scoring at least 4 or 5 goals including 2 fine runs from midfield hitting the ball from both sides of the pony under pressure from defenders. The modest polo player in him said that "the field felt like silk" and that he had no merit doing it since the ball was always there, perfectly laid up on the good surface, adding that he really admired the professionals who can always dig the ball in the most difficult situations.
